CJRLC’s
latest pilot project is downloadable audiobooks from OverDrive,
available to your patrons from home. This is why we think this project
should matter to you:
Our
planning committee identified marketing as a priority for libraries to
prosper in the next three years. We need to show our customers that we
can meet their current information needs and we need to get their
attention. This project is just such a marketing tool. Your customers
can download popular audiobooks from home to their MP3 players or
computers, or they can burn them to a CD. This is news, and will make
your students, teacher, and public think of you differently! Now is the
time to act.
You will
save $500 if you join the initial pilot project by October 1. The cost
will be $1500-6000/year depending on your circulation. Almost all of
that money will go to adding content and you can help select the titles,
get training, and get the records into your catalog if you wish. This is
a great project for high schools, for academics and of course, for
publics. The contract is on the web, thanks to our partner and project
manager INFOLINK. See our web site for more information.

CJRLC Executive
Board Candidates
This fall
members will vote for six CJRLC Executive Board members. Four are
currently serving their first terms and are eligible for re-election.
They include Karen Black, West Windsor/Plainsboro Schools; Cathy Boss,
Jersey Shore University Medical Center; Karen Topham, Brookdale
Community College; and Barbara Ruth, Toms River Schools.
Completing two terms on the board in December are John Glace, Ocean
County Library, and John Woolf, Holocaust Center and Lay Representative.
We thank both of them for their years of service to our members.
Two new
candidates are running to replace them. Kathleen Carr, Ocean County
Library, is running for Public Library Representative, and Katherine
Durante, Executive Director of OceanFirst Foundation, is running for Lay
Representative. Voting reps will be receiving ballot information in the
mail in September.
Preparing Your
Library for Transition:
Planned or Unplanned
Part of a
leader’s job is to prepare his/her organization for a change in
leadership. Don Crocker and Barbara Miller of the Support Center for
Non-profits will lead a short retreat at the Vincentian Center in
Plainsboro on September 27 and 28, 2005, to help us think through the
process.
The
program is part of the leadership series planned by CJRLC and supported
by the New Jersey State Library with state and federal LSTA funding. A
registration form is on our web site.

Program
Coordinator’s
Notes |

Long
after we’ve left school, September still feels like a fresh start,
time to do all those things we didn’t get to last year. So, consider
signing up or sending staff members to some of the following programs!
Because
there’s been a steady stream of requests for information about
obtaining grants, we’ve arranged a morning at the NJ State Library
Funding Center with Teri Taylor. You’ll learn about the extensive
collection of grant information at the State Library, and how to search
the Foundation Center database. A special opportunity for 16 people on
Wednesday, September 21st, from 10:00 - 12:00, and the cost is only
$10.00. Call CJRLC to register.
Join us
at Princeton PL on Thursday, Sepember 29th, when Janie Hermann will
teach the workshop Picture This! Finding and Using Images and
Audio on Accunet/AP and EBSCOhost. It’s hands-on and limited
to 12 people. You know you need this one! Cost is $10.00 (plus parking).
Call CJRLC to register.
The TechGroup
is starting up the new season with a program on OverDrive ebooks and
downloadable audiobooks on September 21st at 3:30 in the CJRLC lab. Our
local OverDrive sales rep, Michael Shontz, will be the speaker. See
Connie’s article on page 1 for details about this CJRLC and INFOLINK
incubator project. If you have not signed up yet, or attended previous
information meetings, now is your chance.
The Librarians
Association of Ocean County (LAOC) is active once again! We had a
lively meeting last spring and a core group is now planning programs for
this year. If you want to get involved, contact Linda Greenwood at
Manchester Township HS, lgreenwood@
manchestertwp.org. |

Getting
to
Know
Pam Groves |
 |
We are
delighted to profile Pam Groves, youth services librarian at Princeton
Public Library and winner of the Allie Beth Martin Award from ALA. The
award honors a public librarian who has demonstrated — and shared with
colleagues — an extraordinary range and depth of knowledge about
library materials. In Pam’s gracious acceptance speech, she
acknowledged the support she’s received from the Princeton Public
Library staff, especially from Susan Roth, head of Reader Services.
Pam’s
interest in librarianship developed during the five years that she
home-schooled her children. Through a multicultural internship sponsored
by the Friends of the Princeton Public Library, she attended Rutgers
SCILS while
|
working at Princeton PL,
rotating through all the departments and getting to know the staff and
services. She’s been at Princeton PL ever since, primarily in the
Youth Services Dept.
Pam
currently runs a variety of programs, from lapsits for infants to book
discussion groups. One of her book discussion groups is for
homeschoolers, another is an innovative intergenerational group for
8-10 years olds with an adult of their choosing. She’s done outreach
to learning centers, run teen programs, and been involved with
Princeton Reads as well. The opportunity to participate in such a
variety of activities is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job
at Princeton.
In
winning the Allie Beth Martin award, Pam joins the ranks of librarians
like Nancy Pearl, Joyce Saricks, and Merle Jacob whose expertise and
dedication has enriched our profession. Congratulations Pam!
